Finns want to combine a vegetable farm with a fish nursery. All for the sake of economy and ecology.

Finland, despite access to the Baltic Sea, imports a lot of fish - about 80%. So there is a great demand for locally produced fish.

In Finland, strict legislation on the breeding of fish in open waters, high environmental requirements. Local farmers say that fisheries in Finland are not profitable.

In the province of Ostrobothnia, which adjoins the coast, they decided to conduct an experiment. The local ecologists have developed a program according to which a fish farm and a vegetable farm can be combined in one small farm. Firstly, it saves utilities - water and electricity. Secondly, nursery waste can become fertilizer for plants. Plants do not absorb pure ammonia, but in the experimental farm there is a pool in which ammonia transforms into the form of a nitrate ion and becomes suitable for plants. 2 tons of fish will provide fertilizer with 20 tons of vegetables.

This system requires a lot of money, but in neighboring Sweden, a similar Statsjord farm has been successfully operating for the fourth year. On the territory of the former slaughterhouse, vegetables and fish are bred. Production volumes are two tons of fish per week.
