Farmer Andreas Vogel feeds his pigs with herbs and hay from alfalfa. He sells meat for Berlin gastronomy under the Saalower grass pig brand.
At the Vogel farm, animals are fed with wild herbs. Retailers and restaurants in the Greater Berlin area advertise Andreas Vogel's pig breeding in a similar fashion.
The 56-year-old farmer managed to set up his usual production in such a way that he could sell about 5 thousand slaughter pigs per year through an expensive direct marketing channel.
Today he practices organic farming on 1.2 thousand hectares, and also remains faithful to pig farming. However, the production of piglets was discontinued.
From the very beginning, it was clear to him that livestock, which went beyond the scope of the standard, could be financed only through separate marketing. And this is exactly the place where his idea comes into play.
The largest male pig weighed 639.5 kg.
A central element of his marketing for herbal pigs is special feeding. Conscious feeding of grain with a high external supply is also not suitable for animal health. The real plant component is added to the diet with a Vilofoss feed supplement, Vogel explains.
It is mixed with 0.25% feed and contains various plant extracts as well as essential oils. Vogel does not consider the use of this feed supplement to be just a marketing gimmick.
Direct speech: “The supplement stimulates the appetite and promotes the metabolism of animals. The latter provides better nutrient utilization and high performance, ”says Vogel. In his animals, the feed conversion is 1: 2.67, and the daily gain is 900 g.
