During phytosanitary inspection of old foci of quarantine organisms spread in one of the districts of the Chernivtsi region, potato cancer was discovered.
Potato cancer hit an area of 0.44 hectares, according to employees of the State Food and Beverage Service. And in the Chernihiv region in one of the regions a golden potato nematode was discovered. The area affected was 3.59 ha.
Currently, an order has been issued for the application of phytosanitary measures for the destruction of quarantine organisms, as well as a procedure for the movement of regulatory objects in quarantine zones and beyond.
For information, potato cancer is very rare in Ukraine and is unfamiliar to most gardeners. There is evidence that he first came to the country from Germany during the Great Patriotic War in a load of potatoes, which was intended to feed the invaders.
The causative agent of potato cancer is the pathogenic fungus Synchytrium endobioticum (Schilb.) Perc, which leads a parasitic lifestyle not only on potatoes, but also on other nightshade ones. It affects the root system of tomatoes, physalis, wild nightshade.
It is noteworthy that the fungus does not tolerate extreme heat or cold. In the northern and southern regions of Ukraine, where the earth has been freezing for a long time at a depth of 10 cm to -11 ° C or warming up to + 30 ° C, potato cancer is not detected.
