A pear with properties that are reported to reduce a hangover has won an award at the Farmers Congress.
Pear Piqa Boo, grown by Clive Baxter at his farm near Maidstone in the UK, took first place at the National Fruit Show. The show took place over two days at the Kent County Convention Center and was dedicated to quality produce grown in the county and the rest of the UK.
Clive Baxter said: “Koreans have always said that if you drink Asian pear juice, it helps with a hangover that some people suffer from as a result of drinking alcohol. The Australian government has actually investigated this and says that, among other health benefits, the pear makes a hangover easier. ”
In 2015, researchers found that drinking 200 ml. Asian pear juice before drinking limits the effects of a hangover. They also concluded that eating these pears had similar hangover-reducing properties.
Despite their findings, the researchers were unable to understand what exactly contains the juice of an Asian pear, which prevents the effects of alcohol.
Juice is thought to reduce the toxic metabolism responsible for hangover symptoms. The fruit is an Asian pear crossed with a European variety, and was originally developed in New Zealand.
Along with selling fruit in supermarkets next year, Baxter also plans to sell the juice itself, calling it Nashi Gold.
