Dr. Judith Bryans, Executive Director of Dairy UK, a UK-based trade association of dairy cooperatives, producers, farmers, and milk buyers, urged MPs to get together urgently and agree on a form for future UK relations with the EU so that the dairy industry can adequately plan for the future.
“No matter what you think of Brexit, the industry has been given the clarity or time it takes to prepare for these potentially huge tariff changes or deal with the consequences,” said Dr. Judith.
Dairy UK Executive Director also warned that “The EU is our largest export market, accounting for more than 90 percent of UK dairy exports. If this trade becomes subject to high tariffs, they will automatically become uneconomical compared to their EU counterparts. ”As a result, there will be a significant crowding out of British dairy products, which will lead to a serious price shock due to oversupply.
If parliamentarians want to avoid a serious price shock, in the UK dairy industry, which will have a long-term impact on its production capacity, the solution can only be to reach an agreement on relations with the EU.
