Brazilian Agriculture Minister Teresa Cristina Diaz said the US agreement to further inspect the country's meat packaging system is a step towards opening up the United States to get fresh Brazilian beef, but that’s not enough.
Statements by the Minister of Agriculture came after a visit to Washington with Brazilian President Jeyr Bolsonaro, as the new president seeks to improve his relationship with the Trump administration. On Tuesday March 19, Brazil announced the introduction of an unlimited quota for wheat imports and the steps to allow pork imports to the United States.
In exchange for this, the United States made minor concessions, agreeing to conduct further inspections of fresh beef producers in Brazil as a “gesture” of goodwill towards opening the beef market.“It's not really a concession, it's a technical problem ... I don't consider it an exchange,” Diaz said in an interview with Reuters in New York.
The United States stopped importing fresh beef from Brazil in June 2017 after discovering meat problems after a scandal alleging that Brazilian meat packers bribed inspectors for favorable results. Brazil and the United States said they “agreed to evidence-based conditions,” which could pave the way for Brazil to open for pork exports to the United States.
