The Bavarian State Agricultural Research Center is exploring how cows can become more climate-friendly.
Cattle in Upper Bavaria is part of an all-German research project whose goal is to create a climate-friendly cow.
Each cattle produces from 500 to 800 g of methane per day, which, according to the calculations of the Federal Environmental Agency, will be as harmful to the climate as if a standard Euro 5 car traveled 4 thousand km.
Professor Spikers team uses food in different experiments over and over again, scales measure its consumption, and milk production is monitored in the milking parlor.
Thus, the cow producing the least methane should be found. It will be used in breeding. It is already clear to the professor that the simmental - from the point of view of environmental pollution - is much more effective than black and white cows, since males can be fed, and cows also produce significantly more meat. In his view, the climate-neutral cow is still utopian.
The cow makes about 100 chewing movements within 1 minute.
Methane and the digestion process in cattle is only one part of the climate problem in livestock, the expert continues. Even more important is the question of where the feed for cattle, pigs and poultry comes from. Soybean-sown lands dramatically worsen the carbon footprint. In addition, livestock is the largest deforestation factor in the world.
To prevent excessive soil fertilization, scientists rely on the use of liquid manure and solid manure in a biogas plant. Gases will be used there, and valuable nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus are fully conserved.
- Earlier we reported that cattle production is growing in Russia.
- We also wrote that Ukrlandfarming is not going to increase the number of cattle this year.
- The number of cattle in the assets of agricultural enterprises of the Republic of Chechnya has increased over the past year.
- Farmers-entrepreneurs and owners of agricultural enterprises of Donetsk and Lugansk regions will receive subsidies from the state budget for the maintenance and breeding of cattle.
